Main Concepts 4

Allusions and archetypes have been a large focus for this class.  We studied over the summer) the Bible, and different roman/greek myths.  I never realized that EVERYTHING in western literature makes allusions to either myth or the bible.  Spending time on the old stories and themes relates back to the sense of story that simply ingrained in all of our brains.
Escaping this (to a degree) is why the novel "Ceremony" escapes some of these plot elements.  We learned about the cool concept of circular story telling, and how different this was then our western system of making stories.
We studied Oedipus a lot.  (The story of killing the father/ marrying the mother, gouging out eyes) all that stuff.  We studied a lot of allusions I'll just always remember this one because we looked at it so much.  The summer project of connecting all of the allusions from the bible and myths to pop. culture today was very eye-opening considering how easy it was to find them all.

  1. I like that you mentioned allusions and archetypes (things I forgot to include in my synthesis of course material). This is rather important, since they are in every work we read, so it's good that you remembered them!

Some of things you might want to add to your posts are the different types of comedy (comedy of manners v. theater of the absurd), what we learned about writing open and closed prompts, poetry stuff (how to read it and the technical things), and Hamlet! These concepts will all be useful to review come May. Be careful that you aren't writing too much of an individual response and focus more on reviewing and summarizing. You want to be able to look back and this and study from it, so going over all of this in a more technical sense will be useful. Overall, good job!

  2. Great job, I liked how detailed this post was! I'm glad that you explained your reasoning more in this concept post, and it'll definitely help when studying for the AP exam. However, I felt like you could have used some other examples as well. Oedipus was one of the allusions we studied, and your information did support your facts well, but there were many other examples of allusions that were explained in class. (allusions to the Bible, such as in "Hamlet" or "Pride and Prejudice")

    Great job overall!
